The German Thrash Metal legend and veteran (uncle) Tom angelripper (Sodom) is back! With a new album, a new cast and new songs. Also on HELD (the abbreviation stands for Hart-Ehrlich-Laut-Durstig, by the way), Onkel Tom focuses on real metal, rugged punk and refrains that you will never forget after the first listen. But German rock fans will also be delighted with this album. Here you will find neither hypocritical underdog prose by very wealthy musicians nor half-silky perseverance poetry, which can be wonderfully marketed at every football World Cup and with “Wetten dass..?” find their place next to hit stars, but honest, blunt texts about celebrations, parties, boozy socializing and the desolate state of our world and its inhabitants.
Uncle Tom Angelripper has pressed 13 tracks onto the CD, some of which are new, and there isn't a single cover version, it's all self-penned. Lyrically there is also well-known fodder on HELD, i.e. alcohol and party! Of course, Uncle Tom has alcohol, but “no one in the band is an alcoholic, you obviously have to be able to handle the stuff,” explains the singer and figurehead of the band, “but beer and schnapps are part of it if you let it rip in between want." In addition to Tom Angelripper, drummer Cornelius Rambadt, who also produced the album, as well as guitarist Marcel Mönnig and bassist Marc Beste let it rip. New in the band is guitarist Klaus Nicodem, who replaces the departed Alex Kraft and has already made his contribution to HELD. Tom: «All the musicians in the current line-up live close together, so we were able to meet and rehearse regularly. An enormous advantage compared to before, which noticeably strengthened the band's feeling of togetherness. The fact that HELD only features their own compositions and not a single cover number speaks for the great creativity of the current line-up.»
HELD is humorous and sometimes also programmatic. "The uncle comes to visit the house", for example, explains the self-image of this colorful group. There are also other hard-drinking numbers such as "A little alcohol", "Who can still stand after the song", "The morning after" or "Im drunk". But there are also more serious moments on HELD, songs that make you think or make you pause for a moment because of their message. In «For Better or Worst», Tom denounces a world shaped by corruption, religious fanaticism and that worst of all human traits, selfishness. Less political but just as powerful, Uncle Tom addresses the restlessness and murderous hunt of our time in “The Scent of Lavender”. And last but not least, on HELD you will find the very first Uncle Tom ballad ever: "I'm still alive", a kind of retrospective description of the condition of 51-year-old Tom Angelripper, who has already lost many important musician colleagues and appreciates all the more that it him and his music still exist.
Musically he is loyal to his roots. Powerful, thundering rhythm section is paired with sleek riffs in mid tempo which are refined by Tom's original way of singing. The band moves a lot closer to German rock than in previous outputs. HELD is authentic, musically and lyrically demanding and yet with a high party factor, as fans of the uncle are used to. The diversity comes not least from the different characters of the members and the respective bands from which they come. Everyone was involved in the creation process, the design of the texts and the overall concept. The writing was done freely, without any outside influences, so that something completely independent was created. A concentrated load of first-class metal / punk and rock songs, peppered with moving lyrics full of anarchy and anger, but also love of life and irony. And of course with full beer glasses. For fans of Germanic songs between fun and seriousness, the silver disc will have a lot of joy from September 22nd. A remarkable disc, with which Tom Angelripper & Co. celebrate life and really live through partying. Typical Uncle Tom stop! Cheers, you sacks!
