The idea that mermaids are actually crazy monsters, which historically isn't that far-fetched, after all, mermaids were often blamed when ships sailed too close to coasts, plus the setting makes the film cool. The synopsis may seem a bit generic, but the trailer really makes up for it. From today, September 9th, we can enjoy the film on DVD.
Two fun-loving American women are on vacation. Although an old sea dog (Franco Nero) warns against entering the Serbian island of Mamula, they can hardly wait to explore the deserted island village with their two companions. They soon discover a prison where a cranky old man is holding a creature from a long-forgotten time that needs to be fed regularly. The vacation quickly turns into a hellish trip when the tourists lose their boat and have to run for their lives on the island.
More could have been done with this wonderfully fresh basic idea. But the bad actors and the even worse camera work turn the interesting story into a trash horror film, and even film legend Franco Nero can't help that, even if he at least got a few good monologues...
